My Cat Got Poisoned!

Ginger 2006-2015

If your sensitive then this blog post might be worth skipping, the reason I am writing about this is to raise awareness of anti-freeze poisoning to animals.

Ok so it was August of last summer one afternoon and we knew my cat Ginger didn't have that much time left because he had been diagnosed with Kidney failure. We hadn't seen Ginge all day and suddenly my neighbour turned up at our door because she thought she had found our cat in her garden and he wasn't in a good state...she looked out of the window to witness him collapsing and going into some sort of fit. My mum went round and came running back with him in her arms shouting for the laundry basket and a towel, I ran to grab them whilst my dad called the vets to let them know we were coming in. Ginge was laying down crying out and looking very confused, his eyes had gone all wide and he was very clearly not ok. I stayed home as I didn't want to see him in that way but my parents took him straight to the vets, they gave him morphine which calmed him down and he was essentially what appeared to be back to normal whilst they ran some tests. Our initial thought was his kidneys but the vet decided to keep him in for observations. Later that evening, the test results came back and it was anti freeze poisoning, if you google it then you will find that it is one of the worst poisonings anyone/anything could go through because it basically burns your insides bit by bit. The vet gave him some more morphine and said she'd call us back later that night when she went back to do a final check on the animals staying overnight. 10pm we received a phone call to say that Ginge had gone back to the state that he had been in when we took him in, she confirmed that in order to keep him feeling ok he would need to be on a morphine drip but this essentially would just slow down the process and didn't guarantee him to stay alive. We decided to put him out of his misery and pain and put him to sleep. This was a really hard decision, he was about 9 years old and we had had him since he was just a few weeks old along with his brother, Casper. For a good two months Casper because the most depressive, mopey, sad cat where he would constantly want attention and love and when he wasn't being like this he was sleeping. They never appeared to got on but it took me by surprise at how the loss of Ginge affected him.

A couple of days later we received a call from our vet to say that another cat from our area had gone in with the same anti freeze poisioning and it is thought that someone was actively doing it in our area. Whether they were or not I can't help but fret how important it is to make sure that your chemicals are locked well away, cats drink anti freeze because to them it tastes sweet. Please keep an eye on your cats and raise awareness of this horrible act. We miss our little boy everyday as he was the most beautiful and perfect cat, very chatty and always looking for someones lap to curl up on or give him lots of fuss.
